The Allure of Pharmaceutical Sales Jobs
The pharmaceutical sales field is often referred to as a “recession-proof” career. Even during the current economic crisis, the demand for experienced and qualified sales professionals is high. While many are stuck at their mundane 9 to 5 positions earning just enough to make ends meet, and at times not enough, others are exploring other employment opportunities. Pharmaceutical sales jobs are topping the list for quality jobs offering job security and many other benefits. While it is a competitive field, these jobs offer an excellent salary, excellent benefits, opportunity for growth, flexibility, and the use of a company car or car allowance. Because of the vast benefits more and the fact that the industry is the most stable and fastest growing in the world, these sales opportunities have become extremely attractive.
The great thing about these sales positions is that while it is preferred that an individual have either experience in the industry or a bachelors degree, it is not required. Those with little or no experience can reasonably apply, interview and be offered a high paying position if they are the right candidate for the company. While you may not need extensive education, companies are seeking individuals with strong interpersonal skills who are interest in medicine and science. Having technological knowledge and an understanding of business practices is a plus, but not required.
Most employers will ask that applicants have either a degree or at least two years experience in business-to-business sales. Anything to prove your track record in sales can be seen as a benefit on your resume or during the interviewing process. While there are several skills that can be taught throughout training and coaching, the right candidate must possess skills that cannot be taught as well. Drive, motivation, organization, creativity, ambition, confidence, and work ethic, are all things that must be inherent in the individual.
Keep in mind, because of the field you will need to pass a driving record history check, a credit check and a criminal background check. While having negative dings on these reports will not disqualify you, it can reflect poorly. Consider interning as a sales rep and seeing if this is a job that will interest you years down the line.
